Look Out for the Details! What to Look for in Self-Storage
When choosing a self-storage unit, you want something clean, secure and accessible. You don’t want to be stuck trying to get into a crowded parking lot when you really need to get into your unit, but you also don’t want to come by and discover that your unit was vandalized or robbed. Here are a few things to look for when choosing a self-storage unit that will keep your possessions safe from thieves and accessible for you!
Look around when you’re examining a prospective self-storage facility. Ask yourself a few questions as you go through.
- Is it clean?
- Is it well-lit?
- Is it staffed by pleasant, knowledgeable people?
- Is there evident security? (Locks, fencing, cameras, etc.)
You want to be certain that your belongings will be safe, and not only from possible theft, but damage from weather or accident. A facility that has clean, dry units, tight security and accessible parking is one that you can be confident of leaving your belongings in without worrying about their safety or your ability to reach them.
The staff and security aren’t the only things you want to consider when choosing a self-storage unit. What about the hours of operation? The availability of management? You can’t always come between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M. during the week to access your storage unit. And this is a convenience for you, not an obligation. You need to be able to access your unit when you need to, within reason. A facility that has reasonable hours of operation to let you access your belongings is considering your needs.
When you’re discussing renting a unit, make sure you have an opportunity to read the rental agreement in detail. Does it have everything laid out in clear language? Can you see even the fine print? You want to be certain that the facility you choose isn’t trying to trick you with terms and conditions you didn’t see before signing the agreement.
